Retention

Finally, you’re done with your orthodontic treatment — and your smile is straight and beautiful. But you’re not done with the journey just yet.

To keep your teeth looking its best, you need the help of orthodontic retention, also called retainers. This orthodontic appliance is important, as it controls or limits the potential changes in tooth position. It holds teeth in their correct alignment as the surrounding bone, gums, and muscles adjust to the new position of your teeth.

You may need to wear retainers for at least six months.

Types of Orthodontic Retention

At St. Johns Orthodontics, we offer three types of retainers:

Hawley retainers

Standard or Hawley Retainers

Hawley retainers are the tried and tested retention appliance. It features a labial bow wire inserted in the incisors, and attached to an acrylic arch. The arch sits below the roof of the mouth. We can adjust the wires as the treatment progresses to continue minor movement as needed.

Fixed Retainers

Fixed retainers consist of stainless steel wires fixed onto the upper and bottom teeth. With this option, you must be extra careful when chewing and biting, as the bonding material may break from biting hard foods.

Essix Retainers

Also called aligner-style retainers, this option looks similar to Invisalign and is a more discreet and more aesthetically pleasing option than wire retainers. These are made from the mold of your newly aligned teeth.

The result of your orthodontic treatment depends on the retention phase, so follow through with the hard work you’ve put in.
