As you look at your teeth in the mirror, your teeth may look straight and you might like your smile, but something is missing. You just don’t seem to sparkle. It could be the yellowing of your teeth, and you don’t notice it because the change in the color of your teeth has been gradual. Like almost everyone, over the years, you’ve probably experienced a natural build-up of organic pigments on your teeth. Proteins from coffee, tea, and other foods have darkened the natural whiteness of your teeth. The use of tobacco, especially, antibiotics, and some minerals also speeds up the darkening process. |

You may have heard about whiteners in toothpastes or over-the-counter whiteners, and you may have even tried some of them. But still, you’re missing that confident dazzle you’d like. Well, good news! Your dentist or orthodontist is ready to help. |
Although whiteners have become more popular in the last few years, the process has actually been around for almost a century. More and more, people realize that yellow teeth are less acceptable, both socially and professionally. Whitening is a gentle and safe process provided by most dentists to give you the smile you had in high school. Here’s how it works. |
Your dentist will first check your teeth and gums to make sure that you begin the treatment in good dental health. Then, the dentist will make an impression of your teeth in order to create a custom-fitting tray just for your teeth to hold the bleaching gel. The complete process takes between one and two weeks, but your treatment time may vary, depending on the type and depth of discoloration. Following the bleaching program, you’ll notice some results quickly, usually within just a few days. The results are quick and very dramatic! |
What is actually happening is that the oxygenating action of the whitening gel will start to work right away to whiten your teeth, and there is little, if any, discomfort. Some patients have experienced an increased sensitivity to cold foods during the whitening process, but that sensitivity ends a day or two after the treatment is completed. The gel cannot damage your teeth or affect the enamel or structure of your teeth. The whitening gel only acts on the molecules that carry the discoloration. |
The treatment not only works fast, but it also has long-lasting effects. If you don’t smoke, and you limit coffee and tea intake, the whitening can last for up to five years. Your own long-term results will depend on your habits and the specific foods you eat. You’ll also notice that you take better care of your teeth by brushing more often when they’re bright and shiny. |
Whitening is available to people of all ages. And you’ll notice a big difference in the treatment provided by your dentist or orthodontist as opposed to over-the-counter programs you can buy at the drug store. If you want a more confident smile by improving the whiteness of your teeth, ask your dentist or orthodontist. |
