Anatomy of a Tooth

Most people think they know a lot about teeth and gums. Well, here are some facts that might surprise you. See how many of these you know.

Tooth Anatomy

  • Enamel is the hard covering of your teeth. It covers the outside portion of the part of the tooth that you can see, the part sticking out of your gums.
  • The dentin is the part of your tooth underneath the enamel. Dentin is much softer and is the part that can decay.
  • The pulp is the part in the middle of your tooth. That’s where all the nerves and blood vessels live.
  • Finally, the root is in the very inside of your tooth. It doesn’t have enamel covering it, but it is covered by a substance called cementum.

Well, how did you do? Did you know all of that? Well, try these facts on baby teeth:

  • The other name for baby teeth is primary teeth.
  • Adult teeth are also called permanent teeth.
  • Baby teeth help the adult teeth come in by acting as guides.
  • If we lose a baby tooth too soon, it can cause our adult tooth to sprout in the wrong place.
