Time for a Cleaning

Cathy Cleanteeth

If you've had your braces for at least six months, it's time to schedule a cleaning already. Many dental insurance plans cover cleanings twice a year because they have found that a good preventative plan is better (and cheaper) than periodontic work later on. You might wonder what to expect with a cleaning with braces, so this article includes what to expect.

Cleanings should be done every six months. A cleaning is done by a trained hygenist. You can have your teeth cleaned any time, but consider making your cleaning appointment at the same time as your orthodontic one. If you can make that arrangement, it's even better because the archwires will be removed from your upper and lower teeth. While the archwires are off, the hygenist will thoroughly floss both sides of each tooth. It might seem like they are digging into your gums, but what they are actually doing is removing as much tarter and plaque as they can. Next, they will take an instrument called a scaler to scrape away any plaque that has hardened onto your teeth.

Finally, the hygenist will replace your archwires, attaching them with the ties, hooks, and/or tubes whatever is required. The orthodontist or dentist will take a final look, making sure that everything is back in place. Be sure to mention any wires that are sticking out. After that, you're ready to go!
