Who Do I Ask?

During your regular visits, you'll no doubt have questions from time to time. Sometimes, it's the doctor who can best answer the question, but many times, the dental hygienist has the answers. After all, dental hygienists are trained, licensed professionals. Licensing varies from state to state, but usually they have at least three years of college level training.

Dental Hygienists are the teeth cleaning specialists, but they also provide oral hygiene instruction, administer local anesthetics (in many states) and provide some types of periodontal (gum disease) therapy. Hygienists are strong advocates of the preventative approach to disease, so don't be afraid to ask them your general questions or tell them about pain you're experiencing, especially if your braces are poking the side of your mouth! Don't leave your appointment until you've checked with your finger or your tongue to make sure there isn't something sticking out that's going to bother you until your next visit!

Consultation

Your dentist or orthodontist is the one to ask how you are progressing. You know that no two smiles are alike, and no two orthodontic treatment programs are alike. But if you feel you're getting close, or not moving along fast enough, discuss it with your doctor. Perhaps you can participate better in your treatment program, and your doctor can give you some suggestions on how to do that. Don't be afraid to communicate with your doctor!
