Braces for All Occasions

Marilyn Merry

After you've had your braces for a few or several months, the changes you're seeing may vary from slight to significant. A holiday is either approaching or one has gone by, and you might be wondering how to best conquer these occasions without compromising your good habits.

First, remember, no matter what the occasion, don't stop brushing and flossing your teeth. Make your appointments at times when you know you'll be able to keep them, even through the hectic times. Continue to eat the right foods, and avoid the hard, sticky, or nutty ones. Here's an excuse for staying away from Aunt Hilda's fruitcake! And try to stay away from foods loaded with sugar, a key ingredient in the development of white spots and cavity formation.

If you're a younger patient, you may have already discovered the options of getting colored bands. Holidays or sporting seasons are great times to celebrate the season or show your team spirit. Parents, don't think that the colored bands for your child are just for fun! When your child gets to choose their own colors, they become actively involved in their treatment and usually take better care of their braces. Patients who take time to choose special colors usually enjoy participating in the process and intend to use them to speed their treatment. There are soft pastels that coordinate with wardrobe, bright colors for holidays, and bold colors for showing a team you're rooting for! These colors can be changed when the wires are changed to add constant variety.

If you DON'T want to draw attention to your braces, clear tooth colored braces and clear bands are also available. If you wear make-up, use can draw attention away from your mouth by a good use of eye shadow and more subtle colored lipsticks, such as beige. Staying away from lip gloss will reduce the metal parts of your braces from looking so reflective.

Whatever the occasion, it's always a great time to improve your smile, self-image, and your ambition to look and feel better. Keep up the good work, and enjoy the season, whatever it may be!
