Brushing Tips

Okay, so you're making and keeping your appointments, not eating the foods that can hurt your braces, and smiling more. But how are you doing with brushing and reaching those hard to reach places? Maybe not so well. And when your braces come off, you want your teeth to not only be straight, but white as well. We don't want to scare you, but careless brushing can leave permanent circles and marks on your teeth. So starting now, if you haven't already, follow these simple steps to keep those braces sparkling and your teeth spotlessly clean.

Brush Often

The Plaque Problem

Plaque is a sticky, white substance that collects on your teeth. It is made up of bacteria, food, and saliva. If plaque and trapped food are left on your teeth and braces, it can cause swollen gums, bad breath, cavities, and permanent marks on your teeth. Plaque can also make your teeth look yellow, so brushing plaque away is important!

Here's how

First, brush back and forth across and between the wires and gums on the top and bottom teeth to loosen the food particles. Next, brush your teeth as if you didn't have any braces at all. Start on the outside of the uppers with the bristles at about 45 degrees toward the gum. Scrub with a circular motion, two teeth at a time, for about ten strokes (circles). Then move on to the next two teeth, and so on. Do the same thing on the insides of your teeth, circular motion, two teeth at a time for ten strokes (or circles). Scrub the chewing surfaces last. Remember to point your brush at an angle toward, or facing, the gum.

When you've finished, rinse out your mouth and toothbrush. Look in the mirror to see if you've missed any places. Check the spaces between the brackets or bands and your gums. If you see any plaque or food still there, brush that area again. When you've finished, your braces should look clean and shiny. (A water pik can be very helpful, but you should only use it AFTER you've brushed.)
